Evrensel columnist Dr. Ayşegül Tözeren, who was arrested following a police raid staged on her home, has been released under judicial control terms.

Tözeren, who was arrested in a police raid made on her home on Tuesday 20 August, was brought to the Istanbul Judicial Complex at Çağlayan today to make a statement. The prosecutor brought nine people, including Tözeren, before the court without taking their statements based on the statements they gave to the police.

Application was made for the release under judicial control terms of seven of the people arrested, including Tözeren, and the detention of two. The decision was passed to release Tözeren under judicial control measures. A ban on leaving the country was imposed on Tözeren. The two people whose detention was sought were also released under judicial control.

TÖZEREN: I LEAVE IT FOR OTHERS TO JUDGE

Speaking to Evrensel following her release, Tözeren said she had never been handcuffed before in her life and didn’t even have a traffic fine against her. Tözeren said, “But I was held at Istanbul Police for three days. I stayed in a six by four-foot cell. Indicating that food and other needs had been met to a degree, Tözeren commented, “Did I really deserve this? I leave that for others to judge.”

Recounting that she saw Yaşar Kemal in her dream on the last night under arrest, Tözeren said, “We were looking at the sea together and drinking raki. His wife Semiha Baban was also there. I had been unable to make an Eid visit to Semiha Baban and this was bothering me. I think Yaşar Kemal was protecting me.”
