Two students remanded in custody following Boğaziçi protest in Kadıköy

Two students remanded in custody following the protest of Melih Bulu, the newly appointed rector to Boğaziçi University by the President.

Ten people arrested at the Boğaziçi solidarity protest in Kadıköy were sent to the court with a request for them to be remanded in custody. A warrant was issued for Şilan Delibalta and Anıl Akyüz to be remanded in custody. Four students have been remanded in custody following the protests against the appointment of Melih Bulu as the new rector to Boğaziçi University by the President.

On 2 February 23 people who were among those gathered in Kadıköy to support the protests against the appointment of Prof. Dr. Melih Bulu as rector, were arrested and gave statements to the prosecutor's office. 10 of the detainees were sent to court with a request for remand. The interrogation of 10 people for whom remand was requested was completed. A warrant was issued for Şilan Delibalta and Anıl Akyüz to be remanded in custody. 

The young people, whose procedures were completed in the Istanbul Police Department, were examined at Bayrampaşa State Hospital and then taken to the Anatolian Courthouse in Kartal. 10 of the 23 people whose testimony procedures were completed in the prosecutor's office were sent to the court with a request for remand, and 13 with a judicial control application. Including, 9 who have been subject to house arrest and banned from foreign travel.  Evaluating the verdict, Lawyer Engin Deniz Ergin said, "The decision of house arrest is very disproportionate and heavy relative to the accusation.

According to the information given by the lawyers on the interrogation of 10 people who have warrants for their remand, groundless questions such as "Did you act in the previous rector changes, do you act on these actions, did you participate in the protests at your own university?".

STUDENTS REMANDED IN CUSTODY AND BANNED FROM FOREIGN TRAVEL

The verdict on 10 students who were referred to the court for remand was announced late. A decision was made to arrest Şilan Delibalta and Anıl Akyüz on the grounds of opposition to the meeting and demonstration law numbered 2911. 5 people were released with a ban on foreign travel, 2 people are under house arrest and 1 person with a mandatory signature once a week.

On the other hand, apart from these people who were arrested during the protests, 5 more people were arrested in the operations carried out on houses.

THE LONG WAIT OUTSIDE THE COURT HOUSE

Those who came to support the detainees continued to wait in front of the courthouse throughout the day.

In the evening, announcements were made that they did not comply with social distance and that they must leave.

In the statement made on behalf of the supporters of the students, it was stated that the curfew hour was approaching, so they would leave the courthouse, but they would continue their struggle until the detainees were released.

EXPLANATION BEFORE JURISDICTION

Students, who made a press statement during the day, emphasised that the detentions and arrests were unlawful and said, "The freedom given to our friends yesterday is not the blessing of anyone, but the work of our organised solidarity.”

Speaking on behalf of the students, Esra Akdere expressed her demands once again:

• All our friends who are under custody and under arrest should be released immediately.

• Police blockades in our schools should be lifted.

All trustees and trustee rectors, especially Melih Bulu, should resign immediately.Democratic, autonomous and free elections should be held in all universities, including all components.

82 PEOPLE RELEASED

In order to support those who protested Melih Bulu's appointment as rector, the police intervened to forcibly disperse a protest in Kadıköy and arrested 94 people.

The teams also arrested 11 people who wanted to participate in the demonstrations in Beşiktaş and Sarıyer, Kadıköy. 82 out of 105 people whose procedures at the police were completed were released yesterday. (EVRENSEL DAILY)
