The the Labour Party (EMEP) Gulf District Building was opened yesterday at mid-day with activities.
"3 YOUNG PEOPLE WHO LIVED IN THE DISTRICT COMMITTED SUICIDE WITHIN ONE WEEK"
Speaking at the opening, EMEP Gulf District President Adem Korkmaz said, the district is one of the most densely populated districts with high levels of unemployment and poverty.Recalling that three teenagers committed suicide within a week in the Gulf in April, Korkmaz said, "Young people are worried about their future and many are stuck with drug addictions. In this district, thousands of workers similarly to Ismail Devrim, who committed suicide because he could not afford to buy trousers for his child, are struggling with poverty. Our party is both trying to fight against this darkness and calling on all workers to fight for a humanely liveable world."
AKDENIZ: WE HAVE TO FIGHT AGAINST THE ONE-MAN RULE
EMEP Chairman Ercüment Akdeniz, who has been conducting investigations within the fire zones alongside EMEP’s Aegean Regional Committee for the past week, expressed his observations in his speech:"The state has withdrawn from the area, the mainstream media have withdrawn, the people are unsupported, they cannot find any officials who will listen to their needs... It's the same with places where there has been flooding. The public do not want to listen to false promises, there is sufficient equipment and food in the area, but there's a lack of co-ordinators. All decisions are tied to one man. Capitalism wreaks havoc all over the country. Where there is no organised struggle of the people, natural disasters turn into bigger disasters and plunders. Therefore, we must overthrow this looting, ranting scheme and the one-man rule which carries this on".
"MIGRATION ISSUE IS LITMUS PAPER"
In his speech, Akdeniz also mentioned the developments in Afghanistan and said that the migration problem is the result of imperialist policies.Referring to the slogan "I do not want refugees in my country", Akdeniz said, "The right slogan should be, I do not want the AKP's refugee policy. The attitude taken on the issue of migration is a litmus paper in terms of the labour and democratic forces of this country. Chauvinism is directing the anger of the workers towards the refugees; this is exactly what we see in Altindağ and we must work to prevent it"… (EVRENSEL DAILY)
