The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled on a violation regarding the lifting of immunity and the trial of 40 MP’s from the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), including imprisoned Former HDP Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş.
In regards to the decision, Lawyer Mahsuni Karaman said, “With the Encu/Turkey decision announced today, The ECHR decided today that the Freedom of Expression of 40 MP’s was violated due to their immunity being lifted and their trial on 20th of May 2016”.
"THEY MUST BE RELEASED"
Lawyer Ramazan Demir shared the following statement in regards to the decision: "The ECHR announced the infringement decision regarding the lifting of the immunity of 40 HDP MP’s. This is how the final act was closed for crimes committed against the Kurdish political movement in a clear violation of the constitution, in which the opposition is also a partner. “Selahattin Demirtaş and his friends, who should not even be detained when evaluated together with the ECHR's Decision of the Grand Chamber, have been in prison for 5 years. The trials that have ended must be reopened, those in progress should be dropped, and the detained MP’s should be released immediately."
HDP co-chair Mithat Sancar commented on the ECHR's ruling, saying that the Turkish government needs to immediately stop the judicial proceedings against the HDP politicians and release them. (EVRENSEL DAILY)
