Health is political

In a society, being the determinant of one's own life means being political. Everything about man is part of politics. Private space is political, education is political, health is political.

We have been in Diyarbakir for the past two days as women from the Turkish Medical Association (TTB). The seventh congress held by women in medicine and women health every two years, was held in Diyarbakir between 1-3 April 2022.  When I was filmed writing this article, I was in the Ecological Crisis workshop. After the workshop framework presentations titled Search for Solutions, the workshops started. Based on the results from the workshops held the day before, it will be true to say that during this last workshop provided more clarity around our path.

In our previous congresses, "violence against women", "science and health that do not see women policies", "family and health policies that do not see women", "women and war", "women, health and conservatism", "women's labour and health" themes were explored, through the experiences we have shared we managed to continue this journey, which we started in 2008, for fourteen years. Except for one, I've come out of these conventions that I've attended more and more knowledgeable. The "VII. Women's Medicine and Women's Health Congress’’ was planned and hosted by TTB Women's Medicine and Women's Health Branch and Diyarbakir Medical Chamber was  titled "Ecological Crisis, Women and Women health’’. While the world has been grappling with ecological crisis for a long time, we aimed to discuss the ecological crisis discussions we have been conducting for some time, since the emergence of the pandemic, from a women's point of view since patriarchal capitalism, which consumes the planet and turns all living things into objects of consumption, has driven the world into an ecological crisis and this ecological crisis does not allow us to emerge from this patriarchal capitalism.

Crises deepen gender inequality within the society, and women are affected more from the deepening inequalities. Even if we just consider the "stay-at-home" stage of the pandemic alone, women were subjected to a lot more violence, they were put out of work, taken out of school, forced into child marriage, had to face extreme poverty, and were forced to bear the burden of care. The burden on female healthcare workers providing health care during the COVID-19 pandemic is also greater and gender-sensitive policies were unfortunately not even on the agenda. That's why this congress was very important.

I think it is necessary to mention Lavinia Llyon Dock, whose name is mentioned in this congress, in this article. In particular, it may help expose the mindset that is "accusing" the TTB of making politics. It must be possible for health to be removed from a framework in the presentation of capital or state and become an understanding and culture that society produces for itself, as seen in the example of Nurse Dock and the ‘’campus movement’’, Nurtured and nurtured by a women's and class movement that struggled with the unhealthy health of the industrial revolution in America in the 19th century, provides evidence that society can do much more to be healthy and stay healthy. According to the movement, which Dock was part of, as an individual, one can achieve healthy life to the extent that it can integrate and create living conditions without giving up its freedom. That is, where objective rules are found and only freedoms are protected, free will is brought to life as much as obligations, the consuming selfishness of individuality is overcome and social consciousness/social responsibility is absorbed, society lives with an orchestral harmony; but a life in which human differences are not lost to be healthy in conditions where man is compatible with nature and liberated together is possible.

In a society, being the determinant of one's own life means being political. Everything about man is part of politics. Private space is political, education is political, health is political. The system, which is based solely on production and consumption, creating foreign and passive people by separating human habitats from politics, leaving the organization of these areas to someone else, technical experts or those who have the title of politician in front of them. However, man is a social being and society contains the solution of human needs. Politics itself is the search for solutions in society. Being healthy is both a social and political issue.
