Immigrants, socialists and neonationalists

We, socialists state that: AKP's immigration policy victimized both our people and Syrian asylum-seekers/immigrants for 10 years. It is because AKP is using immigration as a means for its neo-Ottomanist delusions.

On 8 May 1945, Hitler armies signed the treaty to surrender. And so was left behind the black history in which Jews, Romans, foreigners, socialists and opponents were massacred in millions.

It does not mean fascism has disappeared since it was left behind. Unless capitalism is wiped out, there is always the danger of fascism. As the bloodiest terror system, fascism is brought up in the periods of capitalist crisis. In order to sustain the system, sometimes liberal restoration and sometimes fascist state system is resorted to. Taking violence and coercive force as its basis, fascist governments operate under the orders of organization of bosses, monopolies. To do this, first a propaganda base is built. The aim of fascist propaganda is to destroy the unity of workers. The demands of workers and poor people are misused and capitalized on. Fascist ideology also creates confusion amongst the forces of democracy in order to get support of masses. Fascist propaganda machines start utilising the elevated anger and demands. Xenophobia and hatred for immigrants are amongst the most classic fascist propaganda methods. This way, the clubs of bosses driving workers towards poverty are justified. The blame of economic crisis and poverty are placed on immigrants and refugees.

Fascist party and ideologies have bloody past and they do not appear by name of “fascist”, they do not call the thought they advocate as “fascism”. Those who impose racism and spread xenophobia claim that they do it for “the interest of the nation”. When the circle is widened, socialists, opponents reporters and academicians, Kurds, Alevis, Armenians are put on the target as being a “threat” against the nation.

Fascist politics paralyses the opponents just as poison mixed in water is invisible and paralyses the one drinking it, and then starts ruling. Hitler and his Minister of Propaganda, Goebbels, advertised themselves with “national socialism” to the masses of people. That is nationalist socialism. They were able to get support of the working class having anger against capitalism and taking interest in socialism. National Socialist German Workers Party got 2.5% of the votes in 1928 elections. But the situation changed when the economic crisis was deepened. With Hindenburg clearing the way, Hitler’s party marched to the government. In 1933 elections, it became the biggest party with 33% of votes.

Fascist party and movements, called with the popular name “far right”, but known as fascist party, are in the rise also today. Both throughout the world and in Turkey. New danger is neonationalism. The labouring masses, under high inflation, deep poverty and rain of price hikes, are wanted to be drawn into the black circle again. For the continuation of the old system, fascist attempts are also in the agenda as much as liberal attempts are. Bourgeois opposition parties are putting on the break for the struggle against poverty on one hand. And on the other, they convey the anger to the easiest place, to those at the most bottom, to immigrants. The system parties from the rightist to the “left”ist, from conservative to secular, have created a common and big grey area. Everything is for elections and divine ballot box! The most they compromise on is to put immigrants on the target. Even far and radical outbursts like those of Zafer Party are met with tolerance. The inconsistent “left” quickly becomes rightist. Neonationalist wind is in the works to lay a siege on also left/socialist, democrat, progressive forces. The most influential area of that wind amongst “left” is social democrat base. Because, their managers give credit to and take advantage of that wind. Those opposing in their ranks are left alone in the middle of a political lynch.

So called “left”ists and “nationalists” operating as the writers of neonationalism have started also attacking socialists through media and social media. In brief, their claims are as follows: “Socialists are romantic, they are unaware of reality. Socialists become an instrument of USA-AKP made Great MiddleEast Project (GMP). With the wave of immigration, Turkey is becoming a salafist country, demographic structure of Turks is changing.”

Socialists have never been and are romantic. Who are unaware of reality, and skew the reality by walking arm in arm with chauvinistic propaganda are those having those claims themselves. They kept in silence when socialists, for example EMEP, slammed the AKP’s immigration policy. It was socialists who exposed first the Readmission Agreement signed with EU on the bargaining over immigrants. Nobody saw them in the actions against that reactionary agreement, taking place in Izmir and İstanbul. They were socialists who were in clashes for immigrants in Pazarkule, who stood opposing to EU and AKP policies, those who spoke out in Thrace were again socialists, friendly organizations, academicians, and rights advocates. Those slanderers were nowhere to be found. Who was it to expose first the EU Immigration and Asylum Pact and the global immigration strategy of capitalism? That pact is the one which makes Turkey both an immigrant depot and a training centre for qualified immigrant workers.

It was us who have publicised the requirement of declaration of property of public servants in order to expose the bribery mechanism along the national borders. We socialists have drawn attention to the termination of impunity policy towards immigrant traders and human traffickers.

We ask: Who first drew attention to the danger of legislating “Law on Work Permits of Foreigners” prepared by AKP? It was again us, socialists. That law is the one which turns immigrant workers to modern slaves by giving to employers the right of application for work permits. By that virtue, only 38 thousand Syrian workers have work permits, but 2 million immigrant/asylum-seeker workers are employed without any insurance, and are unregistered. It is also socialists calling on workers to common fight against capitalism and organizing them without any domestic-immigrant discrimination in Turkey, in Germany, and in every part of the world. It is because socialism does not discriminate on race, religion, language.  Workers of all countries unite, it says.

We, socialists state that: AKP's immigration policy victimized both our people and Syrian asylum-seekers/immigrants for 10 years. It is because AKP is using immigration as a means for its neo-Ottomanist delusions. It sees immigrants as cheap labour force.

As for the Great Middle East Plan... When AKP government brought forward the permits of war in cases of Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, it was first socialists to oppose such permits of war forcefully moving people from their land, and turning people to immigrants. We would not of course ignore the forces of democracy and peace walking shoulder to shoulder with socialists. Those, who cheered on permits of war in that period, are today trying to throw mud at socialists with “GMP” nonsense!

Mentioning of demography, it is an exact hypocrisy of those individuals having no mention of Kurds and ethnic minorities who live in this country, to point to immigrants with the propaganda of “Turks are Arabicised, demographic structure of Turks are being changed”. We are not out of solution. Our solution proposal is revolutionary, is of class perspective, it is available in our publication work. Those who want to can look it up. Against the neonationalist wind, there is no allowance for any hesitation in the least. No credit for chauvinistic wind. We will organize the common struggle also in immigration area hand in hand with the forces of labour, democracy, and freedom.
