TGC 8th of March Survey: Women journalists are unhappy about gender inequalities

TGC has spoken with 100 women journalists as part of it’s International Women’s Day Survey. Female journalists raised discontent with gender gap, gender pay and bullying at the workplace.

Turkish Journalists' Association (TGC) has spoken with 100 women journalists as part of it’s International Women’s Day Survey. Female journalists raised discontent with gender gap, gender pay and bullying at the workplace.

Here are some of their responses. In response to the question  “How many women are holding managerial positions in your workplace”  73% of the responders said  over  20, between 5-10% of participants said under 20, and around 10-20% of responders confirmed it was under 10. To the question, “list the most common problems experienced by women journalists at your workplace in order of importance” 67 out of 100 women responded by saying the barriers to reaching their career goals. The rest of the responses in order of popularity were; pay inequalities due to gender, social pressures on women's identity such as being the homemaker and family responsibilities.

“Have you encountered sexual abuse during your career?” 57 of the participants responded as No. 17 of the participants said they have encountered this only once and 14 people said they have encountered it more than once and 12 women revealed that their friends have experienced such difficulty.

NEWS ABOUT ABUSE, VIOLENCE AND INCEST ARE WRITTEN WITH BIAS

These are the responses to the question of “does your workplace offer support regarding the issue of child and female abuse, violence and incest?” a total of 39 respondents responded as Yes. 21 participants responded by saying “ it is overshadowed by your political beliefs”. 19 have said that there is an improvement on the past but it is not sufficient.

“What do you think about the attitude towards news concerning women and children within your workplace?” 36 respondents have responded as saying, “they have no issues”, 36 have said that there is an improvement, 28 respondents have said that it needs further improvements and caution.

WE ARE NOT PAID EQUAL

“Is there a pay gap between your male counterparts who are in the same position as your self?” 39 women responded as Yes. 28 have said they are unsure and a further 20 responded as “we are paid the same”. 67 participants have said that there are over 20 women in their workplace, whilst 15 participants have said that it is under 10.
