As the recent wildfires in Turkey got out of control which also put a thermal power plant at risk, complaints were raised across the country that not enough was being done for combating the crisis. More than 2.6 million posts were shared through Twitter under the hashtag #helpturkey to call for international help.
Prosecution office opened an ex officio investigation into the public’s help call arguing that “some individuals and groups are trying to create anxiety, fear and panic among the public and insult the state and government of the Republic of Turkey in an organized way through real or bot accounts.”
Prosecution office’s investigation came after Turkey's broadcasting watchdog RTUK announced that the broadcasting organisations which have defied the “ethical rules” about the media coverage of wildfires will be penalised in a statement.
