Mine workers in Soma launch action against privatisations

Following the decision to sell the open mines under the Sarikaya board of quarries in Soma, miners launched an action against privatisations.

Following the decision to sell the Aegean Lignite Business (ELI) quarries in Manisa Soma, via the invitations procedures to Coal Enterprise Ltd (KİAS), the mine workers in the area started action.

Responding to the calls from the Soma Mine Workers Union, the workers from the quarries met outside of the union building at 7.30. The workers marched over to ELI’s building calling out slogans.

About 500 miners participated in the march, which chanted "No work, no bread, no peace", "Mines are homeland, they cannot be sold", "We will win through resistance".

Branch president Sevket Sahin, made a declaration in front of the ELI building. He said, “We have lost board A, we will not lose Sarikaya. We will continue our actions until this decision is overturned.

While the workers decided to continue the protests in front of the ELİ, they said that if there is no result, they will stop working in the workplace and start a march to Ankara if necessary. Workers continued to hold sit-ins in front of the ELI building. (Manisa/EVRENSEL)
